Commentary: In Trinity Flap, Obama Tried to Champion What Should Be, But Ended Up Accepting What Is

By: Deborah Mathis, BlackAmericaWeb.com

Among this week’s questions being kicked around the punditocracy from TV studio to TV studio, from editorial suite to editorial suite and from salon to salon is this gem: Did Barack Obama sever ties with his church for personal or political reasons?

So far, only a few talking heads have been able to discern that it is both, astonishing their colleagues who seem to have forgotten -- or never recognized -- that life and politics are not all about the either-or.

One must take the candidate at his word that he withdrew his family’s membership from Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ “with some sadness.” Why doubt that it would be sorrowful to leave the church he belonged to for two decades, whence he drew his spiritual nourishment, where he took his bride, and where his young daughters were baptized into the faith? When one hears about the church’s commitment to the poor, downtrodden, disenfranchised and shortchanged, it is not hard to imagine the difficulty of disconnecting with such a proud and progressive place.

Especially when your hand was forced, as it was on several fronts for Obama.

Which brings us, alas, to politics.
