You don’t have to be a political aficionado like the great, late Tim Russert to be hyped up over this presidential election. So much change is in the wind that, even if Barack Obama loses -- unlikely though that may be, if we are to believe a collection of presidential historians from across the ideological spectrum -- this country will never be quite the same.
The general election campaign has not been fully joined yet and, already, the contest between a post-Baby Boomer black man and a pre-Baby Boomer white man is yielding a fat harvest of phenomena -- stranger than strange bedfellows, counterintuitive positioning, and new openings in the country’s ageless racial wounds.
