Let's Stop Being Angry At Biracial People
Image by Floyd B. Bariscale via FlickrHe was really funny. I seem to recall that he was especially good at climbing things. He had a thing about The Six Million Dollar Man, as many 8-year-old boys did in the mid-1970s. He was also what was then called hyperactive, come to think of it.
But in terms of how we were to process my schoolmate, whom I'll call Troy, the most important and interesting thing was supposed to be that he was -- oh, dear -- mixed.
The "mixed" kid -- usually with a white mother and black father -- was thought of as a bit of a "situation" back then. The idea was that when he was around 12, he was going to have to realize that he was "really" black. CONTINUE....

Why Tiger Woods’ Family Drama Is Our Business
By Jimi Izrael
Tiger Woods got in a slow-speed crack-up over the weekend that would not have been notable if the facts weren't in dispute. In one version of the first story, Woods’ wife is the hero, tending to her husband at the scene of an accident. In another, she's a wife striking out because of tabloid reports of an adulterous husband. There are few sports figures as celebrated as Tiger Woods, and he owes the public an explanation. It all begs questions about the cult of celebrity, domestic violence and what is and isn't our business.

What makes a person legally 'Black?'

By Robert N. Taylor
In the wake of the claims of Tiger Woods, the actions of Michael Jackson and the question about whether Senator Barack Obama was “Black enough,” a question has emerged as to whether there is a legal or biological definition of who is black.
Actually, there is no law operable today which defines what percentage of “black blood” makes one black. The oft-repeated notion that one drop of black blood makes one black is a powerful socio-cultural and historical definition but it has neither a legal nor biological foundation.
The history of the notion can be traced to slavery and the period right after slavery called Reconstruction. Originally, in a bid to stop slaves who had been fathered by white slave owners and overseers from claiming freedom, property rights or possible inheritance, several Southern sates passed laws that in effect defined a black person as anyone with any “discernible amount of colored or African blood.”
But after slavery ended in 1865, these laws began to either die a natural death or were actually repealed during Reconstruction. The controversy which brought the race definition issue up again was the infamous 1896 U.S. Supreme Court “separate but equal” decision in Plessy v. Ferguson.

GOLF CHANNEL ANCHOR SUSPENDED FOR TIGER REMARK

Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman, the sport's first female play-by-play announcer, has been suspended by the network for joking that young players should "lynch [Tiger Woods] in a back alley" as a way to deal with his supremacy.
Earlier she had apologized for her comments.
"On Friday during our golf broadcast, Nick Faldo and I were discussing Tiger's dominance in the golf world and I used some poorly chosen words," Tilghman said in a statement. "I have known Tiger for 12 years and I have apologized directly to him. I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended by my comments."
Apparently the apology was not enough, because late Wednesday, the network made their move to suspend her.
"While we believe that Kelly's choice of words was inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate," Golf Channel said in its statement. "Consequently, we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks, effective immediately."
Tilghman was helped when Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent, said it was a non-issue and considered the matter "case closed."
"Tiger and Kelly are friends, and Tiger has a great deal of respect for Kelly," Steinberg said Tuesday night in a statement released by Golf Channel. "Regardless of the choice of words used, we know unequivocally that there was no ill-intent in her comments."
This recent incident brings to memory the comments made by golfer Fuzzy Zoeller in 1997. After Woods won the Masters that year at age 21 to become its youngest champion, Zoeller referred to him as "that little boy," and suggested that Woods not serve fried chicken or collard greens, "or whatever the hell they serve," at the Champions Dinner.
Woods, who had a different management team in his first full season, did not respond for three days to Zoeller's apology, and it took Zoeller years to recover from the fallout.
Meanwhile, Tilghman's comments became prevalent on news shows Wednesday, and the Rev. Al Sharpton joined the fray by demanding she be fired immediately.
Golf Channel didn't know who would replace Tilghman in the booth this week at the Sony Open or next week at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
