FDA Warns About Fake Cancer Treatments

By: Natasha T. Metzler, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - (AP) The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on teas, supplements, creams and other products that falsely claim to cure, treat or prevent cancer even though they are not agency-approved drugs. All are available for sale on the Internet.

The agency has sent 25 warning letters to companies and individuals marketing these products, FDA officials said Tuesday. Twenty-three of the letters went to domestic companies and two to foreign individuals.

Fed chief may support stimulus effort for economy.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke may encourage lawmakers today to stimulate the economy. Legislators are scheduled to question the Fed chief on steps to avoid a possible recession. Democratic lawmakers say Bernanke has already told members of Congress this week that some kind of fiscal stimulus is needed. But analysts say he'll avoid supporting any particular tax or spending policies. Doing so could spark criticism from legislators who oppose them which would put the Fed's reputation for independence at risk.

The Food and Drug Administration is declaring that cold medicines are too risky for babies and toddlers. It hasn't declared yet whether the remedies are okay for older children to continue using. The FDA says the drugs pose serious and potentially life-threatening side effects for children under two. Health groups also say that there's no evidence that oral drugs actually cure cold symptoms in children so young.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is vowing to wage a war to stop Gaza militants from firing rockets into Israel. Militants have fired about 70 rockets at southern part of the country in the past couple of days. In response, an Israeli air strike killed at least two people in Gaza and destroyed a truck. The strike reportedly intended to target a Palestinian rocket position. This is the latest in a surge violence that began after President Bush visited the area last week to spur talks on a Palestinian statehood.

The former adviser to President Bush is dismissing Senator Hillary Clinton's Michigan primary win. During a conference yesterday, Karl Rove said Clinton's victory showed signs of weakness. The former First Lady, who was the only major candidate to appear on the Democratic presidential primary ballot, received about 55 percent of the vote. Another 40 percent of those voting opted for the "uncommitted option." Rove said she ran against quote nobody and nobody got 40 percent of the vote. He also took aim at Clinton's rival, Senator Barak Obama, and questioned his lack of national experience.

Romney wins Michigan's GOP primary.

Mitt Romney is the winner of yesterday's Republican primary in Michigan. The former Massachusetts governor picked up 39 percent of the vote. Arizona senator John McCain trailed at 30 percent, and Mike Huckabee came in third at 16 percent. Romney is a Michigan native, and his father was governor of the state in the 1960s.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party officials voted to strip Michigan of its Democratic delegates. That's because the state decided to schedule the primary so early. In a show of solidarity, the top-tier Democratic presidential candidates, except for Senator Hillary Clinton, asked that their names be removed from the ballot. The former First Lady grabbed 57 percent of yesterday's Democratic primary voters. Thirty-eight percent voted "uncommitted."

And while Michigan wasn't in the Democratic spotlight, last night's debate in Nevada made headlines. Democratic presidential rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama vowed to put a recent campaign controversy over race behind them. They blamed aides and campaign surrogates for fueling the incident, saying they have enthusiastic supporters and overzealous staff members. Overall, the tone of last night's debate was cordial despite the stakes involved in the race. Nevada will hold its Democratic caucuses this Saturday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is asking farmers to keep their cloned animals off the market. That's despite a recent announcement from the Food and Drug Administration saying food from cloned livestock is safe to eat. The USDA is calling for more time for U.S. consumers to accept the issue given its emotional nature. However, evidence suggests that Americans are probably already eating meat from the offspring of clones. Officials from the nation's major cattle cloning companies say they haven't been able to keep track of how many offspring of clones have entered the food supply.
