Why Obama-Clinton 2012 Almost Makes Sense

When former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder first pitched the idea of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden swapping jobs in 2012, it sounded like a ridiculous stunt. It still sounds like a stunt, but it's starting to sound a bit less ridiculous.

The Washington Post's Bob Woodward upped the ante this week when he reported that the idea is "on the table." And there's speculation that Clinton's core supporters are floating the idea to see if it catches on, encouraging commentators who pine for another Clinton presidency, like The Daily Beast's Tunku Varadarajan, who writes of a "growing sense that Hillary would have made a much, much better president than Obama."

Most Women Would Be Mrs. Obama for a Week

By: Frazier Moore

NEW YORK (AP) — President Barack Obama was edged out by George Clooney (24 percent to 26 percent) among respondents choosing "which man they would most like to trade places with for a week," followed by Tom Brady and Bruce Springsteen.

But among woman, First Lady Michelle Obama was the favorite, chosen by 26 percent, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton picked by 16 percent, actress Angelina Jolie by 13 percent and singer Beyonce selected by 12 percent.

Those are among the findings of a new "60 Minutes"-Vanity Fair Poll released Sunday.

Who's Racist Now? Republicans get a bad rap on race. But, Democrats may be the ones who have shown their true colors this political season.

BY ROBERT A. GEORGE

Sept. 2, 2008-- Republicans are trying to get their national nominating convention underway after deep worry about the effects of Hurricane Gustav, but the Grand Old Party faces other significant challenges, including an unpopular president and a country frustrated with both the economy and foreign policy. And a Democratic ticket—led by a charismatic African American that has enthralled much of the electorate—certainly doesn't help the GOP with its difficulties attracting black voters.

That said, the fractious primary contest between Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama demonstrated that the Democrats have their own thorny problems with race. True, the party put on a unified front in Denver. Bill and Hillary Clinton both said the right things in endorsing and making the case for Barack Obama as the next president. But the primary season was rife with racial tension. When Hillary won both Kentucky and West Virginia in later contests, pundits focused on the apparent racial resistance to Obama from white, working-class voters. And Hillary herself made no secret of her intention to play on their fears.

Stereotypical "redneck" voters may be easy targets. But, the most caustic criticisms of Obama came from a trickier camp to explain: liberal intellectuals and white upper-middle-class Democrats who, in supporting Hillary, displayed overt, often racially infused contempt for Obama.

This hostility seems to go far beyond political rivalry. It seemed to suggest a sense of entitlement that this young black politician should not have the right to move up so fast, without first receiving the blessing of white appointed leaders. Women were especially fierce in their attacks in a way that suggested more than just gender-related grievances. Hillary and her supporters, women who themselves often facing the "not experienced enough" assertion, used the accusation as a weapon against Obama.

PUMAs ("Party Unity My Ass")—a group of disgruntled Hillary voters, primarily made up of Democratic, upper-middle-class, white women—arrived in Denver still aggrieved, some vowing to vote for McCain. Since Hillary Clinton formally ended her campaign, the PUMA Web site has been filled with angry, racially-tinged comments on how "vicious" the Obama campaign is. He is sarcastically described as the media's "golden boy"—with a dismissive "Oops, was that racist?" line added.

Former vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro, of course, caused a major stir when she declared that the only reason Obama was leading the race, was, well, because of his race. On the last day of the convention, as Obama prepared his acceptance speech, Ferraro printed an op-ed piece explaining what Hillary supporters want: Recognition from Barack Obama that Hillary was a victim of media sexism—and to denounce it.

CLINTON EXPECTED TO END RACE TONIGHT: But it'll cost Obama millions.

From various published reports, it appears that the race between Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for the Democrastic presidential nomination is about to come to a merciful end.

We've also learned that part of the process calls for Obama to help payoff Clinton's campaign debt which is estimated to be between $20 and $40 million dollars.

Apparently, once that happens Clinton is prepared to step aside and put in place plans to endorse Obama. To that extent, it's being reported that she has asked her key donors and backers to be in New York city tonight where she is expected to make a speech to announce the above items.

The Huffington Post.com says "that Obama and Clinton spoke Sunday night and agreed that their staffs should begin negotiations over post-primary activities, according to reliable sources. In addition to seeking Obama's help in raising money to pay off debts, Clinton wants Obama to assist black officials who endorsed her and who are now taking constituent heat, including, in some cases, primary challenges from pro-Obama politicians."

“It’s not about the vice-presidency or any other position she might get. It’s about the money – in particular the Clinton family money,” a source close to a Clinton donor told the UK's Telegraph.

In other words, yes, it boils down to what you're thinking. If Obama wants Bill and Hillary Clinton's support in the general election, he'll have to pay for it. Literally.

JASMYNE CANNICK: Anti-Black attitudes, alleged Democrats, Black political deference, and why I’m still a Democrat.

By Jasmyne A. Cannick

The short and sweet of it is that the Democratic National Committee’s rules and bylaws committee decided to seat all of Florida and Michigan’s delegates at the convention in August.

The catch? They only get a half-vote. This is to penalize them for moving up their primaries. The committee’s ruling gave Clinton 105 pledged delegates from Florida and 69 from Michigan, with a total of 87 votes.

Obama received 67 pledged delegates from Florida and 59 from Michigan, casting a total of 63 votes. The decision keeps Obama’s lead in tact.

Enter angry Clinton supporters who are claiming that the Democratic Party is throwing the election away on an “inadequate Black man” and that if she isn’t the nominee—hello McCain! Can you imagine the fallout if an Obama supporter had been quoted in the media calling Clinton an ‘inadequate woman,’ let alone an ‘inadequate white woman?’ The media would have a field day—no make that week!
