Last week brought a couple of surprises, followed by sad predictability.
One day, it was Maureen Dowd, the celebrated New York Times columnist, diagnosing Rep. Joe Wilson’s “you lie” outburst against President Obama as a symptom of racism. “You lie, boy” is what he really wanted to say, Dowd divined.
Shortly thereafter, former President Jimmy Carter told a television interviewer that the recent epidemic of name-calling, lie-telling and implied threats – the gun toting at town halls and the like – was, in part, due to racism. Some folks simply won’t accept a black man as president, said Carter.
